You may recall a posting this past fall about the Web Bot project - an experiment that quantifies words used over the entirety of the Internet to create an overall view of trends and, even more amazingly, to PREDICT future events.
This system correctly predicted both the 9/11 attacks as well as the economic collapse of '08.
